Voices From Classmates Vol II

Dear Dante:
If there should be one whom the Class should put into its pedestal by bringing people together, it is no other than you!
Mabuhay ka! –Ching San Luis

Dante,
You're welcome. Always happy to do it. Applauds all your effort. We truly, truly captured those moments. God bless us all with our continued journey and friendship.
Best regards, -Walter Lucas

Dear Dante,
You have put a lot of work for USTMAA. That is great that we have classmates like yourself with such dedication. I hope all is well with you, Margie, your children and grandchildren.
My youngest, Emil, is a first year cardiology fellow at Stanford where he was also chief resident last year. He has 2 more years to go. Vicki and I plan to spend more time in the Phil in the near future.
With warm regards, -Rolly de Goma

Dear Dante,
Thank you very much. You have an impressive communications network.
Yes I have visited our website and seen our pictures. I even remarked to Ira that we have to look good whenever you are around, you being the roving photographer and master creator of the UST MD '72 on-line family album. Thank you for all the efforts you have put on the website; it is an excellent means of communication to all.
Regards to the family. -Menchit (Borja Yudis)

Hello, Dante. Good day to you and regards to all our batchmates there in the States. Here are my recent pictures for our souvenir photofolio that you and Ching San Luis are preparing. Am so grateful to you for all the news and pictures which brought lots of happy and pleasant memories. So glad to see my former classmates again, even just in pictures. Guess we are all senior citizens now but glad to know that "matitibay pa rin" and the female classmates,"may asim pa" and from the looks, "wala pang amoy lupa". Ha ha ha ha. In a few days from government service and maybe, just maybe, will be able to visit former classmates staying in Manila and there in your land of milk and honey.
Love you, guys......Tony Victor

Dear Dear Dante, Cyn, Bebay & all class mates:
So, a community to be called the UST Medicine Class 1972 GK Community!!! What a fitting tribute to our Class sense of Social Responsibility. As we look forward to our Ruby Jubilee in 2012.
But charity begins at home as the saying goes. Right within our backyard, we have those in need of support. We have sick classmates whose needs for medical therapies are enormous.
This is our Class' Epiphany!!! Its manifestation of solidarity with those marginalized and afflicted. The spirit of Togetherness in good times and in bad times. There is perhaps no better legacy that we can leave our children, and our Alma Mater, than the compassion that we have all been sensitized to as Thomasians.
Regards to one and all. –Ching San Luis.

Dear Dante,
Thank you for putting together this nostalgic collection of our past reunions. I am sure it was a labor of love. See you in Vegas. –Alma Cuevas Horilleno.

Dear Dante:
If there is one who should be given thanks, it is you. For you have galvanized the Class into action more than words, and results more than promises.
The Coral Jubilee celebrations in Las Vegas and in Manila, as well as those little get-togethers we have here and there when someone is in town or when passes thru a city, are the fuel that keeps the fire of camaraderie and fellowship among all of us burning.
As we look forward to our Ruby Jubilee (and beyond), may our classmates find the bonding getting stronger and irresistible. May the yearning for each other's - and one another's - company grow with the passage of time and stoked by the photos you have been taking and contributed by others. Those who have not been with us in our reunions and homecomings -- for one reason or another -- will find some empty spot somewhere in their lives. We hope that these spots diminish in time and become covered by the timelessness of the photographs that document these events. Continue to serve as their surrogate eyes and ears. In the fullness of time, we shall meet somewhere, sometime, in the grandest of homecoming and you will be there as our Class Chronicler.
Happy New Year!!! -Ching San Luis

Hi everyone,
It was so much fun to feel like a young med student again with my
friends for life, even for only a short while. We should do this
again. Soon!
Betsy did'nt give her daughters email address. Please, someone, make
sure she sees this. Likewise for Ricky.
I still think he sees more than we think. Thanks again ricky. You are
special.
Therese sends her best to all.
Peace and joy for the yuletide – Dick Estacio

Dear Dante,
Congratulation to a job well done. We are on our way to be at par or better with the most charitable of the Med Graduates. Good show at Las Vegas.< strong speech, proactive and delivered very well with a lot of substance. More power. More reflections later. Ides Santos

Dante,
Thanks for this email and the updates on the recent reunion. Cecille is doing a great job and I hope her call for support of all our projects will gain ears on those who have so far BEEN INACTIVE. THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL PICTURES. Nancy Padla

Dear Dante,
Thanks for all the help and warm reception you accorded me.
I really enjoyed being with you guys and congrats for a very successsful congress.
I re-activated my rsdrbones@yahoo.com to keep in touch with you.
Btw, you can see me everyday Mon-Fri at www.untvweb.com Kaagapay, a public service TV program aired 7-8pm(Phil Time) and also Sat and Sun, 5-7am-Kami Naman
Regards to the family. Mandy Saguin.

Dear President Dante,
Thank you very much for sharing this with us and most specially, many thanks for taking care of Mandy. He came home complete and brought home many gifts for me and my son. That's the very nice part. Congratulations for a successful reunion. From Mandy's story, the event was well organized. Best regards, Peachie Saguin

Dear Dante,
You amaze me. How can you do all this e mails and still have a busy practice and family life?
I am sure you are happy because it is paying up. I have never seen as much people give.
Cora Aguilar-Veza.

Hi Dante,
It was a nice reunion and we are all proud of your commitment to this lofty endeavor of ours. It was also a pleasure to see your cute grandson. Mones Santos.

Dear Dante and Marge,
Please allow us to hug you by email as an expression of our gratitude .
The reunion was truly fun and memorable. How I wished it would have been longer.
I thought that’s the reason why Casinos does not have clocks!
We all could have danced and reminisced all night. Our loving thoughts were also with those
not present.
The renewed friendship and togetherness amongst your
class was just spectacular. We are all so blessed to have each other.
Truly a one big family. “and the population growing” " I'll have my own washing machine"
Lovingly, Walter & Lilia Lucas.

Hi Dante,
The reunion and the camaraderie we had was both enjoyable and memorable. The distance we travelled just to be with you guys was well worth it. And you're correct, the time was too short to enjoy each other's company. How we wished we could've stayed longer with all of you. Anyway, hope to see you and the rest in Manila for the homecoming. Have a good one!
Perry and Mel Warren-de la Cruz.

Hi Dante,
When I left the Phil. I really had the intention of seeing you guys in Las Vegas, this Cynthia Flores-Fernandez knew right from the start. But unfortunately, my daughter-in-law,( as well as my son who were supposed to be there too, being their 10th ), went on premature labor, so we decided to cancel our trip to las vegas.
I will see you guys in Manila in December for the homecoming. Presently, I am here with my son in Yuma, Arizona. he is a practicing interventional cardiologist here. I will be going back home next month.
I will give my share for our 1972 funds to Cynthia when I see her.
See you in December.........Ruth Villanueva-Gutierrez.

Congrats for a very successful and enjoyable Coral Jubilee reunion.
Hoping to see you in Manila this December. Toots Uylangco-Pabalan.

Thanks Dante for sending all those pictures hopefully next year i can attend all our reunion as my immigrant appication for Canada is under process after my son petitioned me.Right now I am still here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia but I will be in Manila God willing by December and January and I would like to know who among our classmates would be in Mamila by Deeember or January so I can meet them too.Regards to everybody and Hasta la vista. Willie Dayak-Victor.

Thank you, Dante, for the wonderful time we had in Las Vegas. It was nice to see you and the rest of our friends who were able to make it to the reunion. Congratulations and good luck with your continuing work. May you have bountiful blessings for all the good and selfless work you do.
I enjoyed looking at the pictures in our class website. Everybody looked so nice and happy.
Warm regards always, -Naty Mendoza-Tielens.

hi Dante,
WOW! everybody looking good. winner: Naty Mendoza has
kept her girlish looks and Boy de Guzman, his boyish
figure and looks. Dante, you are a very close second
to Boy. he won by ....a smidgen!...hehehe Alexis Munoz-Dasig.

Dear Dante:
Thanks for the birthday notice for the month of July. But who in the world is that face beside my Thomasian graduation picture?
Eden Nuval.

Hi! Pls let me know how i can get the DVD reunion. Thanks! Regards!
Vicky Hernandez-de Jesus.

Finally was able to see the CD you sent. Well done. It accomplished it's intended goal --- evoked/jarred nostalgic pleasant and mischievous memories of those years spent with a group of smart and talented but young people! See you all in Las Vegas !! Charley Berona.

Dear Dante & Margie
Got your DVD Video and it is so nice. Have to show it to my friends here. Just talk to Rey Mariano and he is coming to our reunion together with his wife Vergie and that of Mandy Saguin. We will surely have a good time. Take care and God bless. Ping Labayo.

Dear Dante,
Thank you for the DVD. Raffy & I watched it last night. Brought back memories of the reunion in Chicago with Nitz at the helm. We miss her.
We congratulate you on your hard work on this project & putting together the '72 website. Good job!!
I finally was able to rob a bank & will send you our donation to the Class Legacy. Mahirap na palang mag rob ng bangko ngayon dahil walang pera ang mga bangko dito. What I found out was most of the Illinois banks' money are being transferred to the Alabama banks. Ha! ha!
Have a happy 4th. Warmest regards, - Nancy & Raffy Castro.

Hi Dante,
A check is on the way from us. Plus another stork too. Someone is considering or giving in!
We will see. I'll show you how to do the kick ball change and Marge to kick under IT (Argentine flicks) if you have not learned it yet. This will really be hilarious!
Start some stretching exercises. My medical mission in Isabela is September 2008.
I have two big competitions coming up. I still have to have to work.
I am still not sure. -Walter Lucas.

Marlene and I were able to get someone to cover for us and so we will be able to attend the reunion in Las Vegas this July. Please e-mail to me ASAP the program of activities. We are more interested in the CME meeting and our own class party. Thank you. –Larry Rosales & Marlene Chaneco-Rosales.
Thank you. We have registered for the CME and the dinner/dance party on July 4th. I sent an e-mail to Cecille but she has not responded yet. There are no more rooms available at the Wynn so we will be staying at the Venetian. The DVD was nicely done. See you in Las Vegas.
-Larry Rosales.

Dear Dante,
Thanks for all the info and the dedication.
Unfortunately, we could not make it to Vegas. I know we will have a successful and memorable reunion. Dean Grace Gonzaga from the FMS, will, of course be there to represent the University.
I understand many of us from Manila are coming to the grand reunion.
It should be a once in a lifetime gathering, showcasing class of 72 talents.
An event magnifique, we could imagine. But most of us who will miss the show, will get a good "review" and photos from your regular news and also news from the good people of Manila.
Have a rowdy reunion. Resty Monzon.

Hi Dante,
Yes I received the DVD and thanks a lot for sharing it.Took a peak into our website and it looks great. It's a matter of using it now. – Raffy Diokno.

I am so sorry to have answered so late. I have been busy with my new daily tv show, that I have missed opening emails, thou my wife have informed me about it. Our website wwwuntvweb.com

Yes Mandy is a celebrity now. He's well known not only as an orthopedic surgeon but a tv host in the daily show KAAGAY with Connie Angeles, not to mention his show every Saturday and Sunday, KAMI NAMAN.
I will not be joining Mandy in this trip, so he can fully enjoy the company of his friends without having to worry about me. I do hope thou that someday I will have the opportunity to meet the President he spoke so highly of . Sincerely, Peachie Saguin (Spouse of Mandy)

This is Lilia for Walter(Lucas)
We received the dance and reunion DVD. Sorry we will not be able to join the dance formation.
Sayang. Some family obligation in Vegas. Walter wants to play Bruno or Len Goodman
to Dante. Ha,ha...
I've been making coral colored satin bow ties and ( handkerchief ???) for Mar,Virgilio and Walt.
I'll say okey Mar and VD, here it is but be a legacy donor. Some idea. I could make Dante a coral boxer short so when he kick it will show. Joke. Problem is I don't see high rondes and kicks like he mentioned.
I am just excited for all you. I can't wait to see you guys.
I hope most would just come and enjoy. This is what Walter keeps telling me.
Enjoy and have fun! The reunion DVD is just great!
What a fine job and dedication put in. See you in Vegas.

with every good wish, -ryan mark dunuan ablao (Ryan Mark is Estela Dunuan-Ablao’s son)

Dear Dante,
We had a meeting last Monday at Toots Uylanco's place in Makati, and finalized our fund raising "bingo extravaganza" with sumptuous dinner and madjong sessions. Most if not all are very eager to join the Las Vegas 35th Coral anniversary. Kindly inform me the duration for each presentation. Btw, you might be interested to watch my TV sitcom "Kami Naman" which is aired globally live at www.untvweb.com, 5am to 7 am Philippine time, every Saturday and Sunday.I have a medical segment (FASTER - First Aid Services and Training for Emergency Response) there which provide helpful tips in emergency situations.
Warm regards, -Mandy Saguin.

Hello. I just want to express my deepest gratitude for the financial
support from the Class 72 Mutual Fund. I would always keep it in my
heart. Again, thank you... Estela Dunuan-Ablao.

May you get well soon. Our most ardent prayers are for you and other classmates who are not well - Dante.

Hello. Actually I am Ryan Mark, Dr. Estela Ablao's son. I am doing her this favor as there is no internet connection in our hometown, Kiangan, Ifugao, where she works as the Municipal Health Officer. She is here in Manila right now. It was Dr. Cynthia Flores-Fernandez who gave us your class yahoo group. We went to see her recently. I read her your email and she told me what to tell you.
My mom is practicing in the government for almost 27 years. I guess her dedication to her people had kept her in the same position for so long. Her concern for the welfare of the people in our hometown is admirable.
Well, she has 3 children, I being the eldest. Second is Gideon Gabriel and our youngest is Camille Therese.
She wishes to thank you for adding her. And that she hopes she could get in touch with your class. Any info you send thru this email will be forwarded to her. Wish your family is doing well too.
With every good wish.
-ESTELA DUNUAN-ABLAO.

Serving the people is praiseworthy indeed! I admire your dedication. We miss you Estella! - Dante.

Dear Dante,
I have been in the area since 1985 putting up my own solo practice and have weathered the rigors of this profession. As far as members of class 72 I am not aware of anyone who is settled here in the Pacific Northwest. As always you are an admirable leader and wish to thank you for letter sent the old fashioned way just to get in touch. So long. Manny Posadas.

Thanks for getting in touch, Manny. -Dante.

Dear Dante,
I would like to take this opportunity in extending my deepest gratitude for giving me financial, moral and spiritual support. I'm alone in battling against my affliction since all my children are in the UnitedStates. Although they communicate with me almost everyday. You are really heaven sent together with our other classmates who pioneered the founding of the Sick Benefit Foundation and Mutual Assistance Fund abroad and local respectively whose goal is to help those who are in need of financial support to their illness. Keep up the good work and somebody up there will look down upon you!Sincerely Yours, Carmelita "Chit" Valente-Garduque, M.D.

Chit, you are not alone! You have THE CLASS 72 rooting for your full recovery. You are the embodiment of the virtues of patience, sacrifice, perseverance, endurance, fortitude, and love,. We are praying for you - Dante.

Alex and Grace Alviar.

Dear Dante and Margie,
Your christmas greeting is a most sincere and joyful greeting and I can't help but to respond to it with equal sincerity and joyfulness in my heart. You and Marge have created a beautiful family (and that is the greatest blessing anyone could ever have!)and my wish for all of you in this merry season of our Sweet Jesus' birth is......May you and all the members of your created family continue to hold on together and may your happy, intimate relationship with one another transcend all earthly tribulations and be strengthened by the ever presence of the Lord in your hearts! P.S......I'm sorry I can't send picture of my own family. Hindi ako marunong maglagay ng picture sa e-mail kasi!

Thanks. You can send it to me by mail. Wala ka nang excuse ngayon.
–Dante.

I also commend and support Dante's lead in the Med 72 Legacy, the work horse and what will be remembered in the long run. A self contained benefactor with capability to grow. I plan to give my second installment of five and maybe sooner to achieve it's independence earlier. Any amount is welcome. I am a declared donor but it is the amount that is anonymous for now. I plan to bequeath a modest sum from my estate upon my death. That is if the twins did not get hold of it first.-
Ides Santos.

May we have more kind hearted classmates like you Ides! –Dante.

I wish to thank again our Class of '72 (Phil and USA groups) for the moral, spiritual and material support. really appreciate all that! I am sure the other recipients or would be recipients of this worthy class project share the same view.
We'll be home in time for christmas...for that classic pinoy christmas that we all know about! So sorry to those who will miss the festivities but, here is sincerely wishing everybody, Happy Holidays!! –Doy Briones.

May you continue to do well, Doy. It is always a pleasure to serve a fellow classmate and friend. We will always remember you in our prayers. -Dante.

Dear Dan,
Your goal and your mission are truly worthwhile and benevolent. We are in support of you. God speed and God bless.
Best regards, - Ed Santiago.

I treasure your friendship and your support forever!
You are one of the catalyst of this movement. -Dante.

Dear dante,
Your idea is of course wonderful. Let us try/ and hope that many will embrace this cause.I can promise to help you with $1000 when we meet in Dec 2007. -Nancy Padla.

Thanks for your never ending support for the cause!
-Dante.

Dante-- Pardon the tardiness of this response to your letter- but it is hectic around here at this time. I received your letter sometime back ALSO and was awaiting a response from my accountant to certain queries as to the best way of handling this tax deduction. He must still be on vacation.
Anyway, I do agree with you as to this class vision regarding a "legacy" and will be doing my part for it. It will probably start next year in incremental donations .
Best regards to all and have a wonderful Holiday Season !
–Charley Berona.

Better late that never. You are just great, Charley! -Dante

Hi Dante,
Just wanted you to know that thru your efforts at updating our email group, I was able to reconnect with Grace Estanislao-Alviar. In fact, she has been helping us secure all the necessary paperwork for our forthcoming medical mission in Laoag this coming February.
Another instance of the marvel of cyberspace! We plan to stop by her adopted hometown of San Fernando, La Union on our way to Ilocos to catch up with each other. Thank you for all your hard work. Best regards, -Alma Cuevas-Horrilleno.

Bring home some pictures! -Dante

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. There’s a lot of blessings to thank for.

This is Rusty your classmate. I’m still here at Medical Center Paranaque, presently the Chief of Clinics. Here are some of my recent pictures. Regards to all.
–Rusty Jimenez.

Who is that chick beside you? - Dante.

Dear Dante,
We are doing great.
Thanks for the work you are doing for class of 72.
Marvelous work! – Resty Monzon.

Thanks. So with your work and commitment to pro-life and family affairs. Together, we will accomplish great things. –Dante.

Hi Dante!
You surely got our attention with that threat! Oscar was afraid you may try to put a photo you could blackmail him with. I am sorry we have been quite detached lately, but thins have somewhat slowed down now and hopefully we can make it to our 2007 reunion. Talk to you soon.
Jannie Villasisis-Lopez & Oca Lopez.

Nice to hear from you again. My eyes moistened when I saw you and your family. You look so great. Hope to see you two in person soon. -Dante.

Hi Dante,
We ought to be talking more frequently considering we live in the same place. Work as usual gets in the way. I just want to commend you for all the good work you are doing for the class. The monthly birthday announcements are great keep up the good work. We will see you in Vegas. - Ed Santiago.

I see you daily on the billboard on my way to work! -Dante.

I just arrived from KL Kuala Lumpur from the FIGO Congress and Zeny Young-Bhatia (from New York) and I were in the same tour group/itinerary. We discussed about the plans of presenting ONE number during the Las Vegas homecoming.
I also told her about the things that transpired during our SFO meeting about our 2 classes adopting only ONE name. There was a suggestion by Primo that we all arrive one day ahead of the rest (June 30 instead of July 1) so that everyone could meet and also practice for our presentation.
– Cynthia Flores-Fernandez.

Share me some pearls you learned. -Dante.

Hi Dante. Great reminder! Thanks. Everybody should be there! We already made our reservations.
Fiona is our angel sent from heaven!! Warmest regards to Margie. Lets keep in touch.
Ching Ojeda-Legarda.

Leaders like you and Mon are indispensable. - Dante

The foundation is a very noble cause. Hopefully, the class will support it and the organization will be done smoothly.
– Cora Aguilar-Veza.

I have received very positive and encouraging feedbacks from our classmates. Thanks for your help and support to this worthy endeavor. -Dante

It’s highly probable we’ll see you in Las Vegas 2007. Thanks. – Zeny Bruce-Bengson & Lody Bengson.

Dear Dante:
Thanks for the pictures of the reunion: you must have run out of adjectives to describe the Class! From the looks of the attendees, everyone must have enjoyed the company of themselves. Anyway, next year at LV expect a bigger contingent to attend from RP.
Please get those pictures in hard copy for print in our souvenir program. Our directory is slowly getting more updates as word gets around. Latest e-mail addresses to be added:
-Ching San Luis.

I still have plenty of nice adjectives for THE CLASS 72. I don’t think I will ever run out of it. -Dante

Your leadership, and the able steering and organization of Stella, Joe and Primo are largely responsible for this historic achievement.
We are blessed to have you all. -Boy Abay

That was a great sign of your leadership, and those of Primo and Stella.
I might add, it was my pleasure to have met you. I have emailed with you so long, it was

EXCELLENT LETTER TO ABC, DANTE.... Stella Evangelista,
Dante-
Thanks for your kind words. This is our fight, so I am with you 100%. AsI told my close friend Primto Andres, I am flying to Manila November 6th for a couple of
meetings in Manila, and to Cebu to do open heart. All I asked is for you to please push for my suggestion for Disney/ABC media group to produce a
Historical Documentary about Filipino physicians in the United States the past five decades or more, to let the American public (and the whole world thru
this documentary) the truth and the facts about the Filipino physicians in America and around the globe. I requested Boy Abay and primo to articulate my
suggestion for this documentary, but if they forget, may I request you to please kindly bring this up... as a part of our demands, besides making a more
genuine and more sincere apology during one of their future episode of Desperate Housewives, unlike the casual, hollow and superficial one
they did a few days ago. Let's not totally rule out our legal option, in case Disney/ABC remains arrogant and uncooperative and unrepentant. We already
have our lawyer on contingency, standing by. But most importantly, let us be UNITED and speak with ONE UNITED voice....or else,
we will face our Waterloo. Dante, although in the Philippines, you may email me since I open my emails several times a day.
Thanks for your leadership.
Best wishes, more power to you, and god bless.- Philip
Philip S. Chua, M.D., FACS, FPCS

People need to understand that Teri Hatcher was just reading the script written by ABC’s writers which was approved by ABC management. As a Filipino, I reacted by faxing the formal letter of protest by the Philippine Conuslate to the three biggest hospitals in Los Angeles to let the Filipino health professionals what was going on. Unfortunately the writers in ABC and ABC it self is so ignorant not knowing that Filipino health professionals are licensed and board certified in the United States. There are also Filipinos in the Armed Forces of the United States Medical Corp performing an outstanding job serving and caring for our wounded troops. - Joselito F Blanco [mailto:joey.blanco@csun.edu]

…… But, I think they are only referring to Filipino gynecolgist! Joke only, Noel Canlas
Dear Dr. Gapultos:
Glad you sent a letter indicating our disgust with this episode. It is insensitive, degrading, insulting and is definitely a racial slur. I read your response to the recent slur directed towards graduates of Philippine Medical Schools. Thank you. As an elder of the Filipino-American Medical Community may I suggest that you take on the initiative to invite other Presidents of the various Philippine Medical Alumni Associations (and other Philippine Medical Associations in the US if you wish) to a meeting to formulate a strong response to this ugly episode and to develop ways by which the Filipino-American Physician can respond to any discriminatory actions they face within their respective practices.
The response to the current problem should include statistics regarding IMG's - qualifications before they are allowed to practice, number of IMG Physicians (approximately 25% - 30%) of the total workforce in the delivery of healthcare in this country and location of practice, giving emphasis to the contribution of this group of physicians to the delivery of health care in this Country. Again, thank you for your efforts.
Sincerely,
Hernan M. Reyes, MD, FACS (UST Class'57)

I have another idea. Write ABC that if they do not apologize in print and in their programs, we are going to spread the word that their programs be avoided by the viewing public. That's where are energies and time be focused on.- Felicitas D. Tobias, M.D. [mailto:FT@DoctorTobias.com]
Dear Dante: Thanks for your latest input on this unfortunate incident. I will get in touch with all the current officers of the Society of Philippine Surgeons in America of which I was 2nd president & a founding fellow as well.I will exhort them to voice our consternation at such an insult to our national identity & qualifications. Please keep me posted. -Jacinto (Jack) T. Rios, M.D., F.A.C.S.

10-09-07 Sir/Madam (DAquino), Appreciate your sharing about the updates of this sad event. My personal impression may not mean much. This is my take so far: The apology from ABC is not sincere and not good enough for the damage and harm it did to all Filipino Physicians and seemingly secondary to our birth country for most of us if not all of us. Their reasoning or excuses of "offensive to Filipinos only" is not acceptable. A wrong act against anybody is wrong regardless of ethnicity, time and place. Example: Tortures of prisoners of war is wrong although considered enemies by the other side. "No control of the creative writings of the creative writers of the scripts" is just another way of saying "freedom of speech and expression" which includes "destructive, harmful and offensive writings" of the creative writers. Creative writers are responsible, enlightening, informative, inspiring, motivating and factual writers. Somewhere along the lines of responsibilities and accountability in ABC have approved and gave the go ahead signal to this racial and ignominious episode of the show concerning Filipino Physicians. I am just one person but I am a part of the Filipino Physicians in America. - Carlos Faustino [mailto:cfaustino@cox.net]

Thanks for the letter to the President of ABC Inc. Most of our friends who came are doctors and we discussed about the Desperate Housewives episode which is a favorite topic of conversation and e-mails these days. What I told them is if we boycott the products of the advertisers and they are aware of it, perhaps it will make an even bigger impact and ABC will be forced to do something more than a mere apology, don't you think so? Vivian and Frank Talambiras
Dear Dante,
I missed that episode in Desperate Housewives. I am shocked that those particular sitcom writers think so lowly of Phil. Med education. I agree whole-heartedly with your sentiment. Your letter is appropriate, if not too polite. We should demand (not request) for a public retraction.
Naty Mendoza-Tielens

I think the best way to get back at the producers of this show is to pressure the Philippine government to ban the showing of this program in the entire country. lets see how they react to that!. it will hit them where it will the most- the pocket. we can also launch a campaign to boycott the show among all filipinos living in the states and other countries.
Mario R. Melendres, M.D.
Paranaque city. Philippines

I agree it is a challenge not to lower our guards. We are the best because we care and it is an understatement. Your classmate here is the best sought after because he cares, never a primadona. Offie Ofrecio Maristella my classmate and my CO-intern is the best and sought after over there, because she cares. Phillipines has THE Name recognition of all the IMGs and well like. The comment was directed to a natural born white who was expected to graduate in an American school and might not have. It is really more disparaging to an American born and raise in America because he did not make it in America and graduated overseas not necessarily the Philippines. But we know better and we have to educate them. I did not see the episode because Jun Beato did not email it to me. I bet it was said as a tease to the doctor.
Because of name recognition Phil. was mentioned to represent the whole. Would I have been disappointed if she said Dominican Republic? Considering the source, a soap, it really should not matter, but who the hell do I really know from there!. The network did not do us a favor that is for sure, but we should not be hard on ourselves. Just be th best w can.
for sure. Let us boycott but let us not be hard on ourselves. - Ides Santos
Kudos to you Dante! I had forwarded this e-mail t Class 1965 and some friends form the other classes. – Baby Jaleco
Dear Dante and Ides
This is not only directed to Filipino doctors but all graduates of Philippine med. school like the consultant for the TV show ER who is the President of the American college of Emergency Med. a UST grad. class 1982 –Rey Cordero
Thank you for leading the way.I forwarded your e-mail to different medical school officers and APPA.
Please include Retired Admiral Connie Mariano M.D. as personal physician of President Bill
Clinton and Jorge Garcia M.D. U.S.T. Medical graduate was one of the doctors who attended
the wounded President Ronald Reagan. - BOY Vijungco

Dear President Dante,
This is not the first time that I've heard Filipinos were insulted, and its really very sad. Your letter is very nice. Thank you for sharing. -Peachie Saguin

WHEN the dust has settled, a summit or meeting of the different alumni organization is in order.
We should do a soul searching and find the root cause why the Filipino Physicians was the main Target.WHy not the Indians or Pakistanis Physicians
who were the London Bombers and terrorist. Philippine Physicians working as a nurse and massive immigration to U.S. and other parts of Europe
did not help our cause. The summit should include Philippine Government officials. A newspaper report
that appeared in Kansas City Star list the worst medical schools whose graduates are in the U.S.
Unfortunately, one of them was a Philippine medical School, included a school in Guadalajara and one
U.S. Medical school. An article in the New York Times quoting a Philippine physician claiming to be a
medical board topnotcher in the Philippines but could not pass U.S. Medical board did not help us.
There were 6 medical schools in the Philippines when were medical students, now 29 or 31 are in existence. No doubt this will dilute the quality of medical students.
Lastly,I would like to congratulate the U.S.T. Medical Alumni Association and foundation officers
particularly Dante Gapultos M.D.,Primo Andres M.D.,Boy ABAY M.D. , TONY GONZALES M.D. for being in the forefront of this controversy.
Joe (Boy) Vijungco

You are absolutely correct. This is a good drill for us, a great learning experience
in vigilance and socio-civic conduct. And, as I have said before, the CAVEAT
is: We must be united, and must speak with one UNITED voice.
Best wishes. God bless.- Philip Chua, M.D. FACS, FPCS.

Dear Dante,
I suggest that we invite Presidents or representatives of various alumni associations and interested parties to Las Vegas in time with our November 10 meeting. We can schedule the meeting for 3 pm that Saturday, after our Board meeting. – Stella Evangelista

Dear Dante:
As a follow-up to my previous communications to you, I am reiterating what I have suggested in the past:
1. Try to join forces with other Phil -Am Medical Alumni Assoc. and other Filipino-American organizations to strategize what additional action need to be done even after the so called public apology by ABC has been made. If they are not interested, then I suggest you lead the charge to get in touch with ABC to arrange for a meeting with the USTMAAA group ( whoever you wish to have in your team). After all UST Med graduates in this country is greater in numbe than any othe PI Medical School. Additionally, the slur was directed against the graduates of PHil. Medical schools and therefore the most affected are those practising in this country.
2. A Sensitivity Forum should be organized and sponsored by ABC in Los Angeles or New York and the program should include my previous suggestions, re:
a. All involved from ABC - Producer, Writer, Artist - Terri Hatcher and a corporate representative should be in the Podium.
b. Several Physician representatives and non physician reps of the Filipino-American community should talk for 5 minutes to voice their displeasure with the program. Physicians should give stastistics on what we have accomplished - there are several sources of this - including the AMA, where we practice, what qualifications are required before we are allowed to practice in this County, we now call home.
c. ABC reps then will be given the opportunity to publicly apologize, delete the segment that is insulting to the Filipino-American Community and give us assurances that such an incident will never happen again.
In my humble opinion, legal recourse should only be made if our demands are not met, otherwise I believe that if such action is taken, it most likely will not succeed and people will view us as only looking for monetary reward.
I am copying this e-mail to Dr. P. Chua who was among the very first and most vocal in his concern regarding this indignity that has been brought to us by ABC.
Hernan M. Reyes, MD, FACS

That should teach them to respect the Philippines because we have the best people, the best professionals working all over the world!
Congratulations for being so courageous and firm in your letter!
Saludos!
Suzette G. Wycoco

Dear Dr. Gapultos:
Thank you for sending your letter to ABC. As President of the USTMAAA, you represent a large group of dedicated Physicians in the US and ABC cannot ignore that. Let me know if I can be of some assistance in this matter but you should forge on and be on the forefront on behalf of us all. - Hernan M. Reyes, MD, FACS

Hi, Dante!
Oscar and I are so proud ot your immediate response to this deplorable
incident. I really don't watch this show though I've heard enough about
it from some of our patients who surprisingly reacted quite vehemently
to the comment - it was all over the radio as well. Hopefully we
haven't heard the last of their apologies yet, stronger ammends should
be in order. Oca & Jannie Villasis-Lopez

Good, Dante. Very good.
Maybe it is better if only the actress is sued. She feels isolated that way and if as you say, she was just reading a script, then let her sing the truth and look like a fool to the rest of the world.-Nancy Padla

i agree. we should buy an ad in a widely circulated newpaper and protest against the snide remark made during that abc program. perhaps oni or hunna can come up with a letter. dante's letter to abc sounds very good too. Primo Andres

hi Dante,
i am sharing the letter you wrote to the President of
ABC and the CEO of Walt Disney, with my St. Agnes'
Academy egroup. your letter should be disseminated to
a wide audience so it be known to everyone that we in
the medical community are very unhappy with this
racial insult.your letter is well written. thanks for attending to
this in a timely manner. Alexis Munoz-Dasig

Dear Dante:
You should have used the word "...demand...." instead of "...request..." in asking for retraction and in the cancellation or withdrawal of replays. So, sock it to 'em!!!
Ching San Luis

Dante,
The better solution would be to speak in the language this actress speak. Why dont we charge her in court for oral defamation and moral damages? makatulong pa tayo nang mahirap sa Pinas? I hope USTMAA will take the initiative. If she apologizes, we are civilized and will take the apology. Pero ang iba, mag-ingat sa atin. -Nancy Padla

Dear Dante
We also signed up in the petition that is presently circulating. Please check your yaho e-mail.Lilibeth sent the e-mail.We will do our part in expresing disgust with regards this matter. Thanks for your concern.
Edgar and Cecille Vallejo

Good job -Dante-Well written.- Anna Maria Santos
Good job doc! Thanks! - Lourdes Cacanindin
Kudos to you Dante! I had forwarded this e-mail to Class 1965 and some
friends from the other classes. - Baby Jaleco
